UAB IN PERU Heir to ancient cultures and a rich colonial tradition, Peru is a magical spot which involves one of the richest areas of biodiversity on Earth, and is a melting pot of different cultures who together are forging the promise of a better future. Our main goal is to offer a panoramic view of the broad aspects of culture and civilization in the region of the Andes in South America, Peru in particular. Visits to Lima, the capital of Peru, and Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, will give students the chance to see and learn about key aspects of the history and cultural development of one of the most distinctive Latin American regions. Our program will introduce students to major stages of the region’s historical evolution, including the growth of pre-Columbian civilizations, and the effects of Spanish colonization, as well as the birth of new Andean republics in the early nineteenth century. We will also observe firsthand some of Peru’s major sites of historical and archaeological interest, and engage in discussion of various relevant readings. 2013 Faculty Leaders:
