**Program Fee includes: Estimated round-trip airline travel from Birmingham, 3 credit hours of Spanish language coursework taught by Universidad de San Marcos, in-country transportation, host family accommodations w/ 3 meals daily, 5 days to Macchu Picchu (round-trip air Lima to Cusco, train, hotel, entrance fees), travelers accident insurance, UAB faculty leaders, local guides, entrance fees. Does NOT include personal expenses. Does NOT include UAB Tuition & Fees for 3 credit hours, lunch/dinner in Cusco/Macchu Picchu, or personal expenses. You will pay the fee for your airline ticket to UAB, and UAB will book your reservation. You are required to fly with the group arrangements that have been made. You are highly encouraged to purchase trip cancellation insurance. You will receive further airline ticket reservation instructions after you apply.

***Costs subject to change without notice due to fluctuations in currency conversion rates and/or student enrollment. Furthermore, taxes and fuel surcharges which are not covered by our contract with the airlines are subject to change and may result in additional charges. Although we make every effort to find suitable roommates for each participant, a single supplement may be charged for any single for which no suitable roommate is available. Program Description

UAB IN PERU

Heir to ancient cultures and a rich colonial tradition, Peru is a magical spot which involves one of the richest areas of biodiversity on Earth, and is a melting pot of different cultures who together are forging the promise of a better future.

Our main goal is to offer a panoramic view of the broad aspects of culture and civilization in the region of the Andes in South America, Peru in particular. Visits to Lima, the capital of Peru, and Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, will give students the chance to see and learn about key aspects of the history and cultural development of one of the most distinctive Latin American regions. Our program will introduce students to major stages of the region’s historical evolution, including the growth of pre-Columbian civilizations, and the effects of Spanish colonization, as well as the birth of new Andean republics in the early nineteenth century. We will also observe firsthand some of Peru’s major sites of historical and archaeological interest, and engage in discussion of various relevant readings.
2013 Faculty Leaders:



COURSES: Students will be registered in a total of 6 credit hours. 3 credit hours of Spanish language coursework will be taught by Universidad de San Marcos faculty AND the following UAB-taught courses:
  • (3 credits) SPA 190/290/390/490 - Latin American Culture and Civilization: Peru and Andean Area - Taught by Dr. Carlos Orihuela.


ELIGIBILITY:
  • Sophomore Standing

  • Minimum GPA of 2.7 or above

  • Permission of Faculty Leader & UAB Office for Study Away

Spanish language experience, while not required, is recommended.
