Program Description

PSC 342: MODERN POLITICAL THEORY IN LONDON

"Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."
--Samuel Johnson

Come explore the intellectual origins of early modern political thought and the philosophical development of modern political theory from Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan to John Stuart Mill’s Essay on Liberty. This course combines a study away in London, England, a city at the center of the struggle for freedom from tyranny. Over centuries the power of legitimate government passed from the scepters of kings, who claimed a divine right to rule, into the hands of the people who asserted the natural right to representative government. With the creation of the social contract we are introduced to debates about membership and the role of consent and coercion in public and private life. From the Houses of Parliament to the coffee houses of the Strand, our discussions will illuminate English political writing against the lives of the men and women who animated these ideas.
