Program Description

ALL MAJORS WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE!

Language Prerequisite: SPA 102 or Permission of Faculty Leader

Program will be in Toledo, based in the university city of Toledo which is one hour south of Madrid and easy day-trip distance to a variety of cultural sites. There will be three one-day trips: Madrid, Segovia, and Grutas del Águila.

This program has two main goals: first, to expose UAB students to Spanish culture, history, and customs, and second, to teach them about linguistic variation and advanced grammatical structures necessary to carry out sophisticated conversations with native speakers of Spanish. Students will visit historical sites throughout Toledo, Madrid, and Segovia, and be given opportunities to interact with native speakers of Spanish on a daily basis. Visits to historical sites will be programmed by a guide provided by ESTO.

Madrid, Spain: students will visit the Museo del Prado and the Reina Sofia, the two most prestigious art museums in Spain.

Segovia, Spain: students will learn about the history of the Spanish crown and also appreciate the influence of Roman culture and innovation on Iberian lands.

Grutas del Aguila: student will learn about the geological history of the central Spain area.

By living in a foreign country, interacting with Spanish families and scholars, and visiting sites of cultural and historical interest, students will have the opportunity to enhance their linguistic skills and to gain appreciation of Spanish culture. The history and cultural component of the course is a natural extension of living and traveling through a place where thousands years of history are readily available. The linguistic component of the course is an extension of living in a country where the dominant language is Spanish.

This program is designed primarily for students pursuing minor or major degrees in Spanish but is open to all students with an interest in foreign language and culture. Students are required to have enrolled in SPA 102 or equivalent at UAB.
