Program Description

UAB IN KENYA

Race and Ethnicity: Comparing Kenya and the United States

Students will study race and ethnicity as historically situated socio-political constructs through a comparative analysis of race relations in Kenya and the United States. Centered on the role that race/ethnicity has played in the stratification of society, special attention will be paid to race and ethnicity as variables in access to jobs, education, healthcare, housing and other social service needs.

Through this program, students will develop a sociological perspective regarding race and ethnic relations. It is important to understand how social forces (especially economic and political competition) shape intergroup relations and how race and ethnic relations in turn influence both social institutions and the day-to-day experiences of individual members of society.

You will increase your understanding of the key concepts and theories in the sociological study of race and ethnic relations by having you apply these ideas to intergroup relations in Kenya and the United States.

Students will learn to examine race and ethnic relations in their global context through comparative analysis between Kenya and the United States. Studying the patterns of intergroup relations in other societies helps us by comparison to better understand our own.

This program encourages a more sophisticated and personal perspective on race and ethnic relations in American society, i.e. your understanding of how race and ethnic relations have shaped and will continue to shape your life experiences.

This course will serve as a vehicle for combating racism and prejudice. We hope that participating in this course will increase your resolve to address racism and ethnic prejudice in social institutions and individual interactions.
